You are not required to join the student social security scheme if you are under 28 years old and in the following cases :
- You are an EU, EEA or a Swiss national holding one of the following documents :
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or an EHIC temporary replacement Certificate
- Private insurance certificate with no ceiling of expenditure.
- You are a national of a third party State (outside EU/EEA) coming from an EU/EEA country other than Denmark, Norway, Iceland,Liechtenstein or Switzerland and holding one of the following documents :
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or an EHIC temporary replacement Certificate
- Private insurance certificate with no ceiling of expenditure.
- You are a citizen of Québec in possession of one of the following forms :

For reimbursement of medical fees, you must contact the "Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie".In all other cases
You MUST join the student social security scheme as this is compulsory when enrolling in higher education. The student social security scheme will cover you for medical costs (between 75 % of the cost of consultation and between 40 % and 60 % of the cost of medication).Taking out student social security insurance should be done at the same time as you enrol at university with a subscription of 192 € for the academic year 2007-2008.
We recommend that you also take out an additional student health insurance policy which offers benefits that supplement those of Social Security.
Mutual health insurance (medicare) provides a full reimbursement of medical fees. You can choose between two mutual insurance companies :
Cost : From 80 to 300 € per year.
French government grant-holding students are exempt from paying the subscription fees.
