As Lille is a large university town, the CROUS can provide students with accommodation in private homes. The ideal time to look for a room is between July and the beginning of September. It is during this period that most accommodation becomes available.
The international office of the university can also help exchange students looking for accommodation in town on a first comes first serves basis.

The Intermediary between students and private home owners

CROUS (The Centre Régional des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires), whose aim is to facilitate and improve students' living conditions, is the organisation responsible for putting students and home-owners in touch with each other. From mid-June, CROUS' "accommodation in town" service posts addresses on its website www.crous-lille.fr
They offer a range of search criteria: location, type of accommodation, level of rent, etc…

To register for the "accommodation in town" service, you need to show your student card at the CROUS "accommodation in town" desk and pay a 6.10€ one-off contribution to running costs. You will be given a personal access code. This will enable you to look up the various accommodation offers on the Internet or in CROUS' offices. You may to look up 6 addresses a day. Standard documents are also offered: contract models, inventory, joint security deposit document, etc.

Before giving you the keys to your accommodation in town, the owner will need you to sign a contract and produce an insurance document. He may also ask you for a deposit equal to a maximum of two months rent and for a written reference.

Help with Accommodation

All foreign students over the age of 18 who rent a room in the university hall of residence or with private home owners may request housing benefit (ALS - "allocation de logement social") or "allocation pour le logement" (APL) for certain types of accommodation, once they have a valid residence permit.
